Although the origins of the City's livery companies stretch as
far back as 1066, livery companies play a vital modern role in
commerce and trade and are involved in extensive charitable
activities within the City and throughout the UK. LiveryLive Online
offers a glimpse of the variety of their work and we hope it will
lead you to discover more.

Branching out for charity
Branching Out is a project set up by the Liveries Wood Group,
which comprises the Worshipful Companies of Carpenters,
Furniture-Makers, Joiners & Ceilers, Turners and Upholders; all
livery companies which have historically made their living from
wood.
A high-profile Branching Out charity event
takes place on16 September - an auction to
raise funds for The Arboretum Trust at Kew, home to 6,500 trees and
plants. Under the hammer at Bonhams in New Bond Street will be
around 120 works of art created by celebrities, craftsmen and
artists from oak branches. Among the celebrity artists are Joanna
Lumley, Jon Snow, David Gilmour of Pink Floyd and sports stars
Matthew Pinsent and Tessa Sanderson. There will also be a timed
auction on the Branching Out website.
Professor Sir Ron Cooke, Chairman of Trustees of The Arboretum
Trust, explained why funding was needed. “The major needs are
for the nursery and the propagation facilities, and also the
preservation of new and rare species, so that they can be saved for
generations to come.”
In advance of the auction, the public can view the artworks in an
exhibition
at Castle
Howard in York (11-12 September).
